Flute Doubling for Saxophonists

The most versatile saxophonists often get the gigs, especially if they can play flute! Doubling on flute is an important skill for all saxophonists to have, but it’s one of the most difficult instruments to conquer. Having been a professional doubler in several Broadway shows and recorded or performed with Chris Potter, Sean Jones, Darcy Argue’s Secret Society, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, I’ve more-or-less mastered the art of maintaining a great flute tone despite having primarily saxophone chops. And you can too!

Topics for this course include:

  • Breathing for flute as opposed to saxophone

  • Embouchure

  • Proper tonguing and double tonguing

  • Getting a FAT low register sound

  • Range and accuracy

  • Switching between instruments

And the course comes with a downloadable packet of exercises for you to work on on your own.

As with any instrument, it takes time to build your chops, so don’t rush through these videos. Be patient and incorporate these exercises and concepts into your daily practice little by little. As long as you’re consistent you’ll begin to see results. Happy watching, and I hope you enjoy the series!
